In the Snow- A Mountain Woman Excerpt

December 28

I look down on the lake from the high up on the mountain slopes. The view is breathtaking.

The snow was coming down in big fluffy puffs. The snow coming down was a dry snow not like normal. Not wet and sticky. I knew that each step I took it would be filled within seconds. I trudged upward. I had seen tracks and knew that there was something to be found at the top of the mountain.

The wind was quiet for the moment and there were all sorts of calls and hoots going on around me. In these canyons the sound carries a long way. Was what I was hearing close or far away? Was it around the next turn. I did not recognize the sounds I heard. They were of some type of animal that I not yet encountered. Perhaps the dreaded Yetti. Or perhaps it was just the echos of the forest creatures reverberating off the snow through the trees and into the quiet of the afternoon. I felt confident there was large game here on the face of the mountain and hoped that I would wonder upon a large buck or perhaps a doe. It is so important to stock up for the harder times. I daydreamed of the clothes I would make out of the skins and the meat that I would store in my smokehouse.

Was this perhaps the sounds of bucks fighting over a doe? Maybe it was the sound of the owls coming out to scrounge for varmints. Just then I came out of the brush and saw this! OH MY! IS THIS THE DREADED YETTI?

I jumped back into the bush and hid. Then I saw more of these strange creatures.

They were flying through the air on chairs. What fresh hell is this?

I came to my senses and out of my imagination and realized where I was. I was on the ski slopes and I don't ski. Go here and you'll see why. There in the distance was

Kahuna blessing the snow.

I'll be in the lodge having a hot buttered rum. Care to join me?

I haven't skiied for a really long time, so I've decided to be the family cook. The sore muscles for a couple of days of fun just aren't worth it anymore.

It looks beautiful and cold in your pictures.
